Homemade Calming Lavender Face Masks

This week I wanted to try something different. Instead of making a recipe to eat, I did some research and used food for beauty. I've always wanted to try a homemade face mask because I know there are so many natural ingredients that do great things for our skin without needing to spend $15 on a mask or scrub. The important thing is to know what type of skin you have and how to appease it.

As for me, I have combination skin that's prone to breakouts. I have to live with the annoyance of oily forehead and cheeks while my chin dries out at any sign of non-moisturizing agents. To combat this, I made my face mask with lemon juice and baking soda to whiten old acne scars and a banana to moisturize. I also made a mask for my mother, but her skin is different than mine and oily, so I used almonds instead of lemon and baking soda.  We both felt the ingredients working their magic as we had the masks on, and the lavender gave them a calming scent. I am totally going to do more homemade masks in the future.

What you'll need:

Normal Skin Face Mask:

1 banana
1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt
1 tsp nutmeg
4 ground almonds
1 tbsp honey
1/2 tbsp oates
1 tbsp dried lavender flowers

Oily /  Acne Prone Skin Face Mask:

1 banana
1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt
1 tbsp lemon juice (fresh-squeezed is best)
1/8 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tbsp oates
1 tbsp honey

1 tbsp dried lavender flowers

Make it:

1. Combine all ingredients except lavender for either mask in a large mortar and pestle or in a bowl and then mash the ingredients together until fairly smooth.

2. Add the lavender and stir.

3. Spread the mask over your face avoid the eyes, nose, and mouth. Leave the mask on for 5 to 7 minutes and then wash off with warm water.
