Brunching at Old Salt: A Review

Last Saturday I headed out for brunch with a couple of girlfriends. We mostly randomly selected Old Salt in North East Portland as the place, none of us had ever been there, but we were able to take a quick look at the menu before we picked it, and it was looking good. Boy were we lucky, because this place is FOOD GOLD! Old Salt was Willamette Week's runner up restaurant of the year in 2013, and I am not surprised. Everything we ordered was devoured, and enjoyed.

Old Salt is a meat shop, deli, supper house and bar. And I loved it. And I can't wait to go back. The interior is one half specialty butcher shop and one half cozy restaurant. The decor is woodsy, and gave me a little bit of Twin Peaks vibes. But, that could just be me. Our server had gorgeous turquoise earrings and was just the perfect amount of nice. This was seriously my best brunch experience of 2016!

I was feeling the corned beef hash, served with house made kraut, caramelized onions, potatoes and eggs. Oh dear, this was the best corned beef hash I have ever had. It tasted like the corned beef was cut into thin strips and fried like bacon. This was served with a bowl filled with super flavorful stuff, and some potatoes that were unlike any breakfast potatoes I have ever encountered.

Amongst the three of us girls brunching together, we ordered the three most expensive dishes on the menu- the eggs benedict, winter veg strata, and corned beef. But at $12-$13, the prices were completely reasonable.

The eggs benedict was house ham, poached eggs and hollandaise on a house made biscuit with potatoes. The potatoes were cooked the same as in my bowl of delight- but were better displayed on the plate next to the egg stacks. The potatoes are served whole, which completely caught my attention. They didn't seem baked, so I inquired with the turquoise earring toting server, she told me that they boil their potatoes in a pot of water with garlic and other stuff, and then they finish them in the deep fryer for a few minutes.

The winter veg strata was a piece of house sourdough that is soaked in an egg mixture with mushrooms, squash, caramelized onions and white cheddar with a sunny side up egg on top and it was served with a sunny citrus kale salad.

I know I mentioned here and there that things were house made, I am pretty sure just about every damn thing they serve here is house made. And this house knows how to cook. Yum!

My girlfriends also each ordered Irish Breakfast cocktails which consisted of cold brew, stout, Bushmills and cream. They looked divine, but due to the cream, I couldn't indulge in one. They were marbled beautifully, kind of like a thai iced tea.
