I generally don't cook for my dogs because I find that they aren't picky. They'll eat just about anything including things that are down-right nasty, but sometimes I like to spoil them when they're being especially cute. So, for my first post of 2015, I decided to make some healthy and delicious treats for my fur babies. These treats smelled so good while they were cooking, I had to try a sample for myself! These are fully edible for humans, of course, but they lack full flavor because dogs really shouldn't eat all the extra salt and sugar (neither should I for that matter, but I digress).
I lovingly named these treats Blondie Bones after my scottish terrier-poodle mix because she loves carrots and bananas. I was nice enough to let the other dogs have some too, but I let Blondie know that I made them especially for her.
Ingredients:
1 cup of whole wheat or regular flour
3/4 cup of reduced fat milk
1/4 cup shredded carrot
1 ripe banana
1/4 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp raw honey
optional frosting:
1 tbsp reduced fat or fat free plain cream cheese
1/2 tbsp raw honey
1. Combine all of the ingredients (excluding the frosting ingredients) and mix in a large bowl.
2. Pour into the bone maker and cook for about 4 minutes until golden brown. If you don't have the dog treater maker, then you can use a waffle maker or a griddle to make small pancake-like treats.
3. After you've cooked the batter until golden brown, move the bones or cakes into the oven. Place them directly on the rack and let them cook at 200 degrees for about 20 minutes. This will dry them out so they store safely in an air-tight container.
4. Now mix the frosting ingredients in a small bowl and wait for the bones to cool on a cooling rack.
5. After the bones have completely cooled for about an hour, frost the bones and feed one to your favorite puppy! Remember these are just treats, so don't feed your dog too many or use them to replace their regular meals.
