Mushroom Gravy Recipe
Gravies are my specialty. You may remember awhile back, I posted a scrumptious sausage breakfast gravy recipe. I want to become a master of gravies, but I have many more techniques to learn. One of my projects for the coming year is to learn to make each of the 5 mother sauces (read more here) so I can make a variety of sauces and gravies of my own creation using those basic skills.

Holiday Trail Mix Recipe
My absolute favorite christmas movie that I love to watch every year is Disney's I'll Be Home For Christmas starring the adorable Jonathan Taylor Thomas. It is the perfect funny and heart-warming movie that speaks to the 90s kid in me. Most of the film takes place on the road as Jake (JTT) travels across the country to catch up with his girlfriend Allie (Jessica Biel), and so he can make it home in time to get his dad's Porsche. It inspired me to make a travel-friendly snack that you can take on the road while you're getting where you need to go for the holidays. You can package it up in a cup to sit in your cupholder as you drive across town, the state, or the country.

Dinner and A Movie: Maple Syrup Spaghetti Recipe with Buddy the Elf
Happy holidays foodie friends! It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas trees, pretty paper, twinkle lights, you name the cheesy christmas theme and I swoon. I'll say it, I'm kinda a christmas junkie. I love it, I love my family, and when I get to spend time with them I feel lucky, so what is there not to like? And that time is usually spent making merry, eating, crafting, talking, decorating, all that shizz is right up my alley too. Sign me up!
I've been blasting my Christmas playlist on Spotify, (listen with me here) and I've been streaming christmas movies as much as possible. Which is precisely what brings me to the recipe I am sharing with you today.
It's like my own little version of dinner and a movie. Make yourself up this quick and easy dinner for two. It is so simple, and at the same time exciting, because it's offbeat. It's breakfast meets dinner. It's salty, sweet and savory perfection. Maple syrup spaghetti and eggs is inspired by Buddy in Elf, a truly fantastic holiday movie. Syrup is, of course, one of the 4 food groups that elves try to stick to. Go watch it, yes, even if you've seen it before- it's that good. Just like this recipe- it's that good.

Blog to Taste Turns Two!
Hello foodie friends! Today's post is totally fun and exciting. Blog to Taste turns two tomorrow! Honestly, that is crazy! It seems like just yesterday we were in the planning stages of putting the blog together and deciding what we wanted it to be about. Since then some things have changed, but a lot of the things continue to be the same.

Cranberry Apple Cobbler Recipe
Happy Saturday! It's been a crazy week for me. Finals at school are quickly approaching (as in this coming week), work has been keeping me going and there has been a lot of important TV to watch (did you see The Wiz Live?!). When it came time to make this week's holiday inspired post, I knew I'd want something that would be simple because if I think this week is stressful trying being in the days leading up to Christmas, yeesh!

Popeye Egg Recipe
The Popeye egg goes by many names- toad in a hole, egg in a basket, eggs in toast, cowboy egg, and one-eyed jack among others. When I was kid, though, it was always Popeye egg, and it was a family favorite for breakfast. It's an extremely simple recipe with infinite possibilities for customization. In fact, I've been toying around with the idea of replacing the bread in the recipe with a ham steak with an egg in it. For the purposes of this post, I'm going to take you back to the Popeye egg that I enjoyed as a child many mornings. There's no pretense with a Popeye egg. In fact, you can cook it, serve it, and eat it all while wearing your pajamas.

How To Eat Out In London On A Budget
Well hey there foodie friends! I just got back from an awesome trip to London and Paris with my college girlfriend Brandy. This was my first trip to Europe, and I went prepared to take it all in, and report back to everyone at home. I took a million photos, and overshared to Facebook already, but I have been saving my food photos just to share with you guys!
When we arrived in London at 7:30AM we were hungry, by the time we took the tube, and a double-decker bus to our AirBnB accommodation we were starving. So we headed straight over to Leadenhall Market, I had read that this was the market that Diagon Alley from Harry Potter was inspired by. I had also read that markets were a good place to get food from food stands (read:cheaper).

Munchpak Review
Hello foodie friends!!!! First of all I've missed you so much. We've been gone for a bit. I'm pretty sure October is just a hard time of year for us. But never fear, we'll always be back! Now on to the show.
This week I got the opportunity to try the MunchPak box. I was excited to get to try some of the tasty treats because one, I love snacks, and two, I love fun things. When the box arrived I was ready to get my life.

Apple Pie Applesauce Recipe
Happy Hump Day foodie friends! It's one of the best times of the year when it comes to food as far as I'm concerned. I love good, hearty home cooking. Things that cook all day in a crockpot, rich smells that permeate the home, a feeling of love cooked in. Ahhh, I'm seriously obsessed.
This week I undertook a challenge. As you saw last time, I'm always inspired by what other people are making. Pinterest is a great source of crockpot foods - oatmeals, soups, drinks, and of course...applesauce. So why can't I?

Recipe Review: Pesto Recipe (Dairy Free, Vegan)
Pesto was one of the first loves of my life. As a child, my parents and I would slather a Boboli crust and throw it in the oven, and we would devour slice after slice until it was gone. And then I grew up, and lactose intolerance happened. No more pesto bread. No more pesto pizza. No more pesto sauce anything. No more anything good. Ever.
The world was a dark place.
And it stayed that way for a few years. Then I woke up and said eff cheese- I want to EAT! Since that day, I have dairy freed, or veganized so many recipes. And it hasn't been that bad. You know what is bad? Children who don't have anything to eat. My little food problems need to stay in perspective.

Rosemary Bacon Popcorn Recipe
This one time at Cinetopia... I had a really good batch of popcorn! It was regular old popcorn, but they had a rosemary bacon butter pump that I took FULL advantage of. Every time I've gone to Cinetopia after that night, they didn't have the rosemary bacon butter again. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. This, of course, inspired me to make my own version. It's actually an extremely easy recipe, but it takes time to get the best flavor from your oil. I let my oil sit with the bacon and rosemary in it for a full week, and it had a perfect infusion of the smoky and aromatic flavors that I wanted. Really, you could use this idea and flavor the oil with anything you want. It could be a fun experiment!

Happy Friday, foodie friends! You know what's popular these days? Buzzfeed, duh. You know what's even more popular?! MUG CAKES!
I don't know about you, but I keep seeing these short, fun, delicious looking videos on Buzzfeed of food they're making, and of course some of that includes these delicious looking mug cakes. The most recent one was of this beautiful Raspberry & Ricotta Mug Cake. I was finally on board.

Molcajete Guacamole Recipe
Guacamole is one of those magical things that we're willing to pay a little extra for to make our burrito perfect. It's like the cherry on top. Usually at home I make a boring guac with avocado, mayo, and chipotle seasoning. With a little experimentation and a great dependence on fresh ingredients, though, I made the best guac I've ever tasted. I'm not exaggerating here, guys. The first bite has a hint of spice from the jalapeno pepper and then your being to taste the savory undertones in the garlic. With the final bite, your tastebuds will be swimming in the sweet tangy world of this hand-mashed wonder.
I know people read recipes on blogs like ours and think, " I should totally make that!" but then never actually do it. I'm guilty. In this case, though, I urge you. No, I beg you to try this recipe. It will restore your faith in guac if you've had too many restaurant or other lazy versions recently. Not to mention this recipe is vegan and dairy-free. I think the main reason it tastes so delicious is because it is made of fresh ingredients without added chemicals and preservatives.

Minimalist Baker is one of my very favorite food blogs in the universe. Dana, the chick that runs it puts in some serious work. I am often searching for some sort of vegan version of a recipe, and often settle on her versions because she keeps all of her recipes super simple. natural, and yummy.

Apple Garlic Chicken Pizza with a Basil Crust Recipe
And so we meet again, foodie friends! If you've been keeping up with our social media this week, we have been all over the pizza game. I've been looking at pictures of pizza on Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter so much lately, that I knew I was going to make a pizza once Holly told me she was going to make a fruit pizza. This post is so inspired by different points in my life (a really fun job at Papa Murphy's in high school, a trip to San Francisco, and a love for my Pampered Chef pizza stone), and I can't help but obsess about the result.

Fruit and Honey Pizza Recipe
My post this week was born from my love for pizza and the colors of fruit. I wanted to make a pizza with a vibrant look and taste, so I decided to try a dessert pizza instead of savory. I love a pepperoni pizza as much as Miley Cyrus, but sometimes it's good to think outside the box and improve upon the classics. Like a traditional pizza, my Fruit and Honey pizza has a crust, sauce, cheese and toppings. It can be customized to your own standards, of course, so the possibilities are endless. Depending on the season, you could have different color schemes with your fruit or just cover the pizza with a lot of your favorite fruit.
I like to think of this recipe as a lazy man's fruit tart. It has the crispy crust of the tart but it doesn't require the same amount of finesse and baking skills. To that end, it's still a special treat that you should share with the people you love most.

The Prodigal Son Pendleton Brewery & Restaraunt Review

I want to start off this post telling you that when I stopped in at the The Prodigal Son Brewery, I had no intention of reviewing it. I was hot, disheveled, over my trip to Boise and desperate for a glass of cold water.
My air conditioning on my car wasn't working, the forests were burning, and my eyes and my throat were suffering. The Prodigal Son was clean, cool and almost too good to be true. It really is the best place to eat in between Portland and Boise. Period. And I should know, I have done this trip quite a few times. So I thought, I should share this with the rest of the world- oh yeah, I blog!
The food was great, the service was excellent and the air conditioning was wonderful.

Sunny Side Up Egg in a Zucchini Nest Recipe
Lately, I've been looking at a lot of food pictures online. I find that it is one of the best ways to feel inspired besides actually going out and tasting different dishes and ingredients. I'm attracted to colorful dishes that are uncomplicated and fun, just like our blog! My favorite types of dishes to look at are the ones that feature a sunny side up egg. The yolk pops out like a tiny little sun on the plate, and it draws me in. Unfortunately, sunny side up eggs are always a tough dish for me to master. They require finesse to make sure the top part is cooked without burning the bottom.
I learned the key to making a sunny side up egg, for me, is to cook the egg on medium heat and cover. The cover to traps the heat in. With the heat trapped, the top of the egg also gets cooked so it's not slimy. The key to this method, though, is that you have to be careful not to overcook the egg. If you cook it too long, you will lose the beautiful runny yolk which is the main joy of the sunny side up egg. Using this method, I made a delicious egg surrounded by a nest of zucchini slices, topped with some basic spices. The Sunny Side Up Egg in a Zucchini Nest recipe is simple and only requires 6 ingredients, so it is perfect for a weekend breakfast or brunch.

Italian-Inspired Quinoa Salad Recipe
My recipe this week is in continuation of post from last week which was the review for the Fit & Fresh lunch kit. One of the meals I made specifically with the lunch kit in mind is a quinoa salad. I wanted something that could take advantage of the large salad shaker container, but I wanted to try something more inventive than a green-leaf salad. I'm not overly familiar quinoa. In fact, the only other time I've eaten it was at a work potluck when a co-worker brought a quinoa salad with feta and red onions. I've been hearing about this grain as a superfood for years, but the look of it put me off.

Summer Dinner Inspiration
Hi Foodie Friends! We here at Blog To Taste are always talking about weather appropriate meals. You can see by our posts, how our appetites are influenced by the current weather patterns. And let me tell you, in the event you are not from Portland Oregon, and haven't heard. We are having a super hot summer- and we are even entering our second heat wave this week! In the Pacific North West, it feels like we wait all year to get outside and play, but this year, we're acting like Texans and staying in our air conditioning, and by we- I mean me. I've been following the weather news, and it seems they are attributing the hot weather to something scientists are calling "The Blob". Weird name huh? Anyway, what this means for me, is I spend as little time in the kitchen cooking as possible- and when we need to eat I'm craving salads, sandwiches, BBQ, and food that we can make multiple meals out of. So I thought I's share some good ideas for cool or easy dinners this week.
First up, are my Freedom Fish Tacos from last years Fourth of July menu- these tacos are seriously yummy- and easy! We are making them tonight- cooking the fish on the grill and chowing down on the patio.
Bonus tip: fish tacos and great paired with beer!

Fit & Fresh Smart Portion Reusable Lunch Kit Review
For the last two weeks, I've been putting the Fit & Fresh Lunch Kit to the test. I was given the opportunity to sample this product, and I had fun doing it. I've recently gotten into making and taking lunch to work. In the past I would go out for lunch and buy fast food like Arby's, Subway, Burgerville, Taco Bell, or teriyaki. Not only was this weighing on my wallet, but I was also feeling awful with that greasy food rotting in my stomach for the rest of my 10-hour shift.

Recipe Review: Israeli Couscous Salad
Hey y'all, I figured it was time to eat a summer salad, because let's get real, we Oregonians are just not suited for the heat we have been getting lately. The first think to go in my house, is cooking, and eating anything with heat applied. That's why summer salads are so great! This recipe is one that I cannot take credit for myself, instead I found it on Food.com. A couple years ago I had a delicious israeli couscous salad, and I had been looking to reproduce it ever since. You can follow the recipe below, or check it out at it's original source here.

Turkey Pepper Jack Bombs
Ahhh, the 4th of July. A time for food, friends, and fireworks. Out here in the wild west, Molalla, OR, we celebrate Independence Day in a big way. We have a big parade that shuts down the city, we have rodeos for days, the church fries up a ton of chicken, and we top it all off with a huge firework show. Even though I'm not a fan of the rodeo, I partake in certain 4th of July festivities. My fellow food blogger, Warren, and I have a tradition of watching the parade and grilling brats in my backyard. Food is an important part of any 'murican celebration.
For my 4th of July-themed post this year, I decided to cook up something that embodies the explosive fun of Independence Day. My Turkey Pepper Jack Bombs are filled with a melty pepper jack cheese and surrounded by a crispy dorito shell. They have a little bit of spice, a little bit of sweet, and a ton of flavor.

How To: DIY Patriotic Oreo Pops
Have you started thinking about the fourth of July yet? It's about that time! Well, I have figured out the perfect sweet treat for this holiday: Oreo Pops! They are super cute, so everybody loves them, and they are pretty darn easy to make to boot. You could even make them a day or two ahead to save yourself the trouble on the day of.

For theses pops, you want to use mega-stuffed Oreos, they have more "cream" in them, so it is easier to place the stick in them. Speaking of sticks, you can puck up these cake pop stems at any craft store, and possibly in the baking section of your grocer. For the chocolate I used white chocolate melts, but you could use chocolate chips.
This is a bad picture, but I just wanted to show that I use a piece of wax paper to set the pops on to dry, and that this formation, of putting each pop the opposite way saves space.
Now that you have your sticks stuck in, its time to melt the chocolate. Melt according to chocolate melt instructions, but the basic guidelines are to melt at 50% power in 30 second intervals, mixing in between. Once the chocolate is almost melted, stop heating and let the heat of the cup melt it the rest of the way.
Dip the pops, and place on wax paper, once you get about 6 pops done, it's time to do the sprinkles before the chocolate gets too hard.
Then let them cool, and enjoy!

Dairy Free Dutch Baby Recipe
Lemons: sweet, bright, happy little summertime fruit. It's funny that they got connected as a negative in such a well known idiom as "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade". I suppose it is referring to lemon's puckering sourness, but in my opinion lemons do not deserve such a bad rap!
Well when life handed me lemons recently, instead of lemonade (which Warren covered earlier this week), I made dutch babies, and topped them with a squeeze of organic lemon juice, and it was delicious! Dutch babies are great because they seem so fancy and special, but are really easy to make. That's my jam- fancy stuff that seems so Martha Stewart, but in reality is totally makable by any Joe Schmoe. I am a Joe Schmoe.

Lemon & Pepper Chicken Nuggets with Thyme
Continuing on with our theme of making something delicious when life gives you lemons, I have a tasty lemon recipe for you as well. Since my last post, I haven't had too many "lemons" in life, but things are definitely busy. I got a new kitten who loves to be around her people. Every morning when I leave her sleepy little face, I feel my heart breaking. The first thing I do what I get home is yell, "where's my Stella!" It's hard to find time to cook with all of these animals to love!
My recipe for you today are some yummy little morsels. They are chicken breast nuggets marinated in a mixture of lemon juice, thyme, and black pepper. You can serve them with your favorite vegetable on the side, dip them in a scrumptious scrumptious scrumptious, or put them on bread to make a sandwich. I wanted to make something simple but satisfying, and I think you will enjoy them if you try making them yourself.

Honey Peach Lemonade Recipe
Hello foodie friends, it has been too long. It's not been a fun time had, but we're ready to get back into the swing of things. To get it kicked off we thought, what better way than with lemon themed recipes?! You know the saying, "When life gives you lemons . . ." and life has definitely been throwing them our way. However, I think we've turned them into some really tasty things.

Universal Yums Review: Scandinavia Box
Last month I introduced you to Universal Yums and the China Box from March. This month I'm reviewing the Scandinavia Box from April. Overall, I am more in tune of the tastes of the Scandinavian snacks over the Chinese ones. I understand that these snacks aren't the most accurate portrayal of what people in these countries eat on a daily basis, but it gives a little hint at what they're tastes are. For example, the wasabi crackers in the China Box point to a love of very spicy foods, and the sweet snacks in the Scandinavian box hint at a love for more traditional sweets. So far, I get really excited every time I receive an email telling me that my Universals Yums box has shipped each month. I am looking forward to Israel's snacks later this month, but for now I will break down Scandinavia.

Fancy Pops
Happy hump day foodie friends! I hope you all had a fantastic Mother's Day weekend! It was a scorcher, am I right?! Technically it was only 85˚, but my precious body couldn't handle it. I am a fairly temperature sensitive person, so as soon as it gets too hot or too cold, I get crabby. To keep myself cool, I decided I wanted a fancy popsicle. Generally, I would reach for an Otter Pop (because yes, surprise, I am 12 years old), but I wanted something special this past weekend especially for mom. Thus my idea of a frozen yogurt popsicle was born.

Refreshing Watermelon and Basil Infused Water
Imagine the scene, if you will. It's a hot and humid summer day in the deep South. It's a Sunday, Mother's Day. A mother and daughter are sitting on the porch in their frilly chiffon church dresses. They fan themselves slowly trying to chase away the inescapable heat. There's a pitcher and two glasses sitting next to them on a wrought-iron table. The pitcher is filled with a light pink liquid mirroring the color of the daughter's dress. They're sipping ice-cold watermelon and basil infused water as they gossip about the townsfolk.

Egg Bake: Queen's Puff Recipe
I can't believe it is almost Mother's Day already! Where did early 2015 go? I've got a big plans this weekend- we are having out of town guests Saturday for a BBQ, and then Sunday morning I am hosting a big Mother's Day breakfast for my mother (love her!), my mother-in-law (love her too!) and even my husband's aunt (from out of town) and her daughter. It's a first for me, as we usually do a low-key lunch or dinner, but this is the plan that came together and I am running with it! All the ladies attending are very special to me, and luckily they don't put much pressure on me to be perfect, on time, or well dressed. Phew! Spoiler alert- I am not making this recipe for my gathering- there is simply too many people attending, but I had already flushed this idea out, and lucky for you, I took pictures to share!
